he DeWeese Quintet is an all woman
ensemble led by Maiden Voyage trombonist, Jill DeWeese.
The group was created to provide playing opportunities for up-and-coming
female jazz musicians. DeWeese is
currently the jazz studies director at Fullerton Union High School Academy of
the Arts. Performing with her
are alto saxophonist Megan Brewer, pianist Emily Nafius, bassist Laura Scofield,
and drummer Angie Tabor.

Brewer is an
ethnomusicology major at UCLA, and has studied with Dan St. Marseille and Jeff
Clayton. Drummer Tabor was the 1999
IAJE Sister in Jazz winner, and has studied with Dr. Michael Carney, Randy
Drake, and Jeff Hamilton. Two
Friends of Jazz scholarship recipients, both currently attending Fullerton
College, complete the ensemble. Pianist
Nafius recently won a scholarship to attend the Stanford Jazz Workshop due to an
outstanding solo performance at the Berkeley College Jazz Festival.
She has studied with Maiden Voyage artist Linda Martinez, and with Kei
Akagi. Scofield is currently
studying under another Steamers regular performer, Luther Hughes.
