Welcome. It's been a very long time.
Time is what it's all about. Time for me spent singing for
people in places I never dreamt I'd be in: large festivals,
small private affairs, loud rooms, sometimes empty clubs,
sometimes lines out the door to clubs, but all the same -
time well spent only because I was given the time to sing to
people.
I have loved every moment.
Today I continue to seek the message of every song before I
present it to an audience. Because of this ideal, I strive
to bring newer songs and newer songwriters into my
repertoire. Writers as diverse as: Nick Drake, Aimee Mann,
Elliot Smith, Bob Dylan, Neil Young or as familiar as Harold
Arlen and Hoagy Carmichael. My influences regarding music
are so vast I doubt I will ever find the end to the list of
tunes I'd like to perform.
My history as a singer is a long one, but not uncommon: I
started singing as a child, as many of us do. But it wasn't
until a friend "dared" me to take a voice class that I truly
discovered that I could actually sing well and that people
would listen. Thanks to my first voice teacher (Rowanne
Mark) I learned to respect the art of voice and song. I was
taught early on to sing what I felt and not lie about it.
For this I will be forever grateful: to speak the truth
through melody and harmony is the difference between being
able to tell a story rather than just hit the notes.
Because I committed myself to this thing called jazz, I have
been blessed to sing with many great musicians and artists,
many whom I now call my dear and close friends: Josh Nelson,
John Rangel, Cathy Segal-Garcia, Anthony Wilson, Judy
Wexler, Steve Cotter, Joe Bagg, Matt Otto, Mark Massey,
Rebecca Parris, Mark and Alan Ferber...the list goes on.
These people, these wonderful artists, have inspired me on
so many levels: musically, personally, spiritually. Most of
all, they have all touched my heart, and not surprisingly -
my music.
Which leads me to you - the ones who listen to my music. You
are all a part of this craft for me. The inspiration I find
from many of you who come to the shows, who talk to me and
who care about what I am doing with regards to the "new"
songwriters - you have moved me to keep at it. A very good
friend of mine told me not so long ago that I am my real
true self when I am singing. He is right. If there is one
thing I know about myself it's this: Music is the only thing
that has, and always will, keep me alive in spirit and soul.
I am lucky to be able to share music with you and the world.
It is a gift I do not take for granted.
My hope is that soon I can deliver something new to all of
you once again. I have even begun to write my own tunes.
This is a huge step for me, but only the natural thing to
do. It's about time.
My love to all of you
